Amalric of Bena

Also found in: Wikipedia 0.07 sec.
Amalric of Bena (əmăl`rĭk, ă`məlrĭk, bē`nə), d. 1207?, French professor of philosophy. He taught heretical precepts concerning God, a pantheistic universe, and a progressive Trinity. Before he died, he publicly retracted, but his followers in Champagne formed a heretical sect, the Amalricians. They were condemned by Pope Innocent III and by councils held at Paris (1210) and the Lateran (1215). The heresy resulted in a temporary ban on Aristotle and the Arabic philosophers at the Univ. of Paris.
