Aman, Theodor 

Born Mar. 20, 1831, in Cimpulung-Muscel, Pitesti Province; died Aug. 19, 1891, in Bucharest. Rumanian painter and graphic artist.

Aman studied in France from 1850 to 1858. He took part in the revolution of 1848–49 in Walachia. He was also a great teacher. Aman was the first director of the school of fine arts in Bucharest (from 1864). He is the creator of historical paintings inspired by the idea of people’s liberation, realist paintings and etchings on the life of the Rumanian peasants, portraits, and landscapes. His works “Hora of Unity in Craiova” (1857) and “Tudor Vladimirescu” (1874–76) are in the SRR Museum of Art in Bucharest.
