death angel: see mushroom mushroom, type of basidium fungus characterized by spore-bearing gills on the underside of the umbrella- or cone-shaped cap. The name toadstool is popularly reserved for inedible or poisonous mushrooms, but this classification has no scientific basis.

The most seriously ill were felled by the ``death cap'' mushroom, known technically as Amanita phalloides, which can destroy the liver.
Amanita phalloides - commonly known as the death cap mushroom - poisoned five San Francisco Bay Area people earlier this year, forcing one 13-year-old girl to undergo a nine-hour partial liver transplant.
The same mushroom - technically known as Amanita phalloides - is blamed for poisoning four members of the Chang family in Orinda earlier this week.
