Amara (ämä`rä), town (1987 pop. 208,797), SE Iraq, on the Tigris River. It is a river port and a marketplace for rice, dates, grains, produce, wool, hides, and livestock.
Amara 

a city in southeast Iraq on the Tigris River. It is the administrative center of Amara Province. Population in 1965, 65,000. Amara is a highway junction and the processing center for a large agricultural area, handling rice, dates, and grains.
