Myth.: Wheeler, 257] See : Nymph Nereids fifty daughters of Nereus; attendants of Poseidon. [Gk. Myth.: Zimmerman, 174] See : Sea Nereids in ancient Greek mythology, sea nymphs, the 50 daughters of “the old man of the sea,” Nereus. Hesiod named the Nereids, and many of the names reflect the various qualities of a calm, tender, playful sea. The best-known Nereids are Amphitrite, wife of Poseidon, and Thetis, mother of Achilles.
