American Legion & Peoples State Forests Location: 1 mile north of Pleasant Valley on West River Road. Facilities: 30 campsites (open mid-April through Columbus Day), youth group camp, flush toilets (campground only) (é), hiking trails, picnic tables (é), picnic shelter (é), nature museum (seasonal). Activities: Camping, canoeing and kayaking, freshwater fishing, hiking, bicycling (roads only), hunting, cross-country skiing/snowshoeing, snowmobiling, field sports, interpretive programs (seasonal). Special Features: Forests are located in the Pleasant Valley section of Barkhamsted. The west branch of the Farmington River, a designated Wild and Scenic River, is the center of riverbased recreational activities. American Legion Forest features rugged terrain with steep, rocky hillsides and views of unusual rock formations and the river valley. Attractions at Peoples State Forest include the Barkhamsted Lighthouse and other cultural and historic sites. Campsites are at American Legion only.
