kestrelAny of several birds of prey (genus Falco) known for hovering while hunting. Kestrels prey on large insects, birds, and small mammals. The male is more colourful than the female. Kestrels are mainly Old World birds, but one species, the American kestrel (F. sparverius), often called the sparrow hawk in the U.S., is common throughout North and South America. It is about 12 in. (30 cm) long, white or yellowish below, and reddish brown and slate-gray above with colourful markings on the head. The common kestrel (F. tinnunculus) of the Old World is larger and less colourful. The center's feathered occupants - two red-tailed hawks, two
horned owls, one barn owl and one American kestrel - are receiving
visitors, but at a long wing's-length to protect the birds. By swabbing the oral cavity, we documented
that most birds shed WNV in oral exudates (11 [85%] of 13 species; 29
[69%] of 42 individuals birds); the highest titers were observed in
Great Homed Owl, American Crow, and American Kestrel (Table 7). ``We have several birds of prey - a red-tailed hawk, a great horned
owl, a screech owl and an American kestrel, which is a type of falcon -
and a variety of snakes - rattlesnakes, gopher and king snakes and a
desert hairy scorpion,'' said Joe Lennox, a recreational
services leader. |
