Amga

Amga

a river in the Yakut ASSR, the largest tributary (left) of the Aldan River. It is 1,462 km long and has a basin with an area of 69,300 sq km. The Amga takes its source in the Aldan Range, where it flows in its rocky bed through a deep, narrow valley. The valley broadens considerably below the village Tegiul’te-Terde, and the river flows calmly along the plain.

Fed by snow and rain, the Amga River is high in the spring (up to 7 m or more), with frequent flash floods in summer and very low drainage in winter. The river is usually highest in May, sometimes in June. The average annual flow rate is 178 cu m3/sec. The river is generally frozen over by mid-October, and the spring thaw, accompanied by ice blocks, ends by May. There are ice heaps in winter. The lower Amga is navigable.
