Amirov, Fikret Meshadi Dzhamil’ ogly
Born Nov. 22, 1922, in Gandzha, now Kirovabad. Soviet Azerbaijani composer. People’s Artist of the USSR (1965). Member of the CPSU since 1947. In 1948, Amirov graduated from the Baku Conservatory, where he studied under U. Gadzhibekov and B. I. Zeidman. He was artistic leader of the Kirovabad Philharmonic (1942–43) and of the M. Magomaev Azerbaijan Philharmonic (1947) and director of the Akhundov Azerbaijan Theater of Opera and Ballet (1956–59). He composed the first Azerbaijani lyrical-psychological opera, Seville (performed in 1953 at the Akhundov Azerbaijan Theater of Opera and Ballet), devoted to the emancipation of the Azerbaijani woman. He also wrote musical comedies and well-known symphonic pieces in mugam modes— Shur, Kiurd-ovshary (1948), Azerbaijan Capriccio (1961), and Symphonic Dances (1963)—as well as three concerti for piano and orchestra, romances, reworkings of folk songs, and music for several dramatic plays and films. He was elected deputy to the fourth through seventh convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the Azerbaijan SSR.
