On the southwestern border of MS, southeast of Natchez; organized Feb 24, 1809 (prior to statehood) from Wilkinson County. Name Origin: Adapted from amitie, the French word for 'friendship.'

Area (sq mi): 731.64 (land 729.60; water 2.04). Pop per sq mi: 18.40.
Pop 2005: 13,435. State rank: 62. Pop change: 2000-20005 -1.20%; 1990-2000 2.00%. Pop 2000: 13,599 (White 56.20%; Black or African American 42.70%; Hispanic or Latino 0.80%; Asian 0.10%; Other 0.80%). Foreign born: 0.40%. Median age: 38.30.
Income 2000: per capita $14,048; median household $26,033; Pop below poverty level: 22.60%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $17,420-$19,172.
Unemployment 2004: 6.40%. Change from 2000: 2.30%. Median travel time to work: 36.10 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 56.80%.
