Amoy (ämoi`): see Xiamen Xiamen or Amoy , city (1994 est. pop. 458,000), S Fujian prov., China, on Xiamen island, at the mouth of the Jiulong River. It has an excellent natural harbor and is connected to the mainland by a railroad (built 1957) that crosses on a dike.

Amoy
1. a port in SE China, in Fujian province on Amoy Island, at the mouth of the Jiulong River opposite Taiwan: one of the first treaty ports opened to European trade (1842). Pop.: 746 000 (2005 est.)
2. the dialect of Chinese spoken in Amoy, Taiwan, and elsewhere: a Min dialect

Amoy 

(Hsiamen), a city in Southeast China, in Fukien Province, located on Amoy Island on the Formosa Strait. Population (1959), 221,000. Amoy is a port and railroad terminus. It is joined to the mainland by a causeway 5 km long. It is a major commercial and fishing center in China. Local products include machines, foods, chemicals, rubber and rubber products, and glass and allied products. Amoy has a university.

She was just trying to impress upon her mind that Amoy was two hundred and eighty miles from Hong Kong, when Fun came scuffling back, bearing what she thought was a small sword, till he unfurled an immense fan, and presented it with a string of Chinese compliments, the meaning of which would have amused her even more than the sound, if she could have understood it.
It was found in the banks of the Amoy River in southern China and is remarkable in having every characteristic of the carbuncle, save that it is blue in shade instead of ruby red.
