Anabar

a river on the upper Bol’shaia Kuonamka River, in the northwestern part of the Yakut ASSR, discharging into the Laptev Sea. The Anabar is 939 km in length, and its drainage basin covers 100,000 sq km. Its sources are in the southern part of the Anabar Plateau (Central Siberian Plateau), where the river valley has steep, precipitous sides. At the point where it joins the North Siberian Lowland the valley is considerably widened. At the mouth (Cape Krest) the river forms a long, shallow estuary (Anabar Gulf). There are numerous lakes in the basin of the Anabar, which is fed by both rain and snow. The mean annual discharge of water is 498 cu m per sec. The river freezes at the end of September, and solid ice lasts from the middle of December until May. The ice breaks up at the beginning of June. The main tributaries are the Malaia Kuonamka, the Udzha, the Uele (on the right), the Suolama, and the Kharabyl (on the left). There are diamond deposits in the river basin.
