Smorodintsev, Anatolii Aleksandrovich 

Born Apr. 6 (19), 1901, in the village of Askino, in what is now the Bashkir ASSR. Soviet virologist and immunologist. Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1966; corresponding member, 1945). Member of the CPSU since 1967.

Smorodintsev graduated from the University of Tomsk in 1923. He worked at the L. Pasteur Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology in Leningrad from 1933 to 1937, the All-Union Institute of Experimental Medicine in Moscow from 1938 to 1945, and the Institute of Experimental Medicine in Leningrad from 1946 to 1967. From 1967 to 1972 he was director of the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Influenza, and beginning in 1972, he was head of one of the institute’s departments.

Smorodintsev’s works have dealt primarily with the mechanisms of antiviral immunity and vaccinal protection against viral infections. Smorodintsev described hemorrhagic nephrosonephritis in 1944 and diphasic meningoencephalitis in 1953. He created vaccines against influenza, Russian spring-summer encephalitis, measles, and mumps. He verified the safety and effectiveness of the poliovirus vaccine against poliomyelitis.

Smorodintsev received the State Prize of the USSR in 1941 and the Lenin Prize in 1963. He has been awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Badge of Honor, and various medals.
