On the south-central coast of AK, at the head of Cook Inlet, 470 mi. south of Fairbanks. Founded 1914. Borough and city were consolidated as the municipality of Anchorage; includes Glen Alps and Girdwood. Name Origin: For Knik Anchorage, a settlement just offshore. This was named for a Tanaina village spelledKinik and Kinnick 'fire'. Previously called Ship Creek and Woodrow .
