, he painted a range of contemporary subjects, from nudes and portraits to still lifes and streetscapes. His most ambitious works are three large allegorical tableaux he called Idylls, which he worked on for decades beginning in the 1970s. Other notable paintings include Street Scene (early 1960s), Self Portrait with an Apple Pie (1967), Green Cupboard and Kettle (1977), Still Life with Corn Popper, Salt Shaker, and Buns (1982), Portrait of Michael Lapp (1987), Portrait of Morris Dorsky (1991), and Still Life with Salami on a Red Plastic Plate (2001). He taught at Brooklyn College (1974–2004), as well as at Pratt Institute, the Art Students League, Yale, Princeton, and Columbia.
