Andrade, Mário de (ändrä`thā), 1893–1945, Brazilian author. Through his fiction, poetry, and wide-ranging essays, Andrade became a leading representative of Brazilian modernismo modernismo (mōthārnē`smō), movement in Spanish literature that had its beginning in Latin America. ..... Macunaíma (1928, tr. 1984), his most important novel, is marked by colloquial and innovative language and anticipates the rise of magical realism in Latin American literature.
