Marggraf, Andreas Sigismund
Born Mar. 3, 1709, in Berlin; died there Aug. 7, 1782. German chemist. Member of the Berlin Academy of Sciences (1738) and honorary member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1776). Marggraf perfected a means of obtaining phosphorus in 1743. In 1747, with the aid of a microscope, he discovered the presence of sugar crystals in thin sections of beet. REFERENCEFigurovskii, N. A.
