Andreev, Andrei Andreevich 

Born Oct. 30, 1895, in the village of Kuznetsovo, Sychevsk District, Smolensk Province, into the family of a peasant. Soviet party and state figure. Member of the CPSU since 1914.

In 1914, Andreev was a worker in cartridge-case workshops in Petrograd. From 1915 to 1917 he was a member of the Petrograd Committee of the RSDLP (Bolshevik). He was one of the organizers of the Petrograd Union of Metalworkers and a delegate to the Seventh (April) All-Russian Party Conference. He participated actively in the October Revolution and took part in the Second All-Russian Congress of Soviets. From 1917 to 1919 he was engaged in Party and trade union work in the Urals and the Ukraine. From 1920 to 1922 he was secretary of the All-Union Central Council of Trade Unions. From 1922 to 1927 he was chairman of the central committee of the Union of Railroad Workers. He was chosen a member of the Central Committee of the Party at the ninth and 11 th—20th congresses. In 1924–25 he was secretary of the Central Committee of the All-Union Communist Party (Bolshevik); from 1926 to 1930 he was an alternate member and from 1932 to 1952 a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee. From 1927 to 1930 he was secretary of the Northern Caucasus krai committee of the ACP (Bolshevik). In 1930–31 he was chairman of the Party’s Central Control Commission, people’s commissar of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Inspectorate of the USSR, and deputy chairman of the Council of People’s Commissars. From 1931 to 1935 he was people’s commissar of communications of the USSR. From 1935 to 1946 he was secretary of the Central Committee of the ACP (Bolshevik). From 1938 to 1945 he was chairman for the Soviet of the Union of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. From 1939 to 1952 he was chairman of the Commission of Party Control of the Central Committee of the ACP (Bolshevik). From 1943 to 1946 he was people’s commissar of agriculture of the USSR. During the Great Patriotic War, he was also involved with military transport, railroad transport, and the supply of winter uniforms to the army. From 1946 to 1953 he was deputy chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR. In 1953 he became a member of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. Since July 1962 he has been an adviser to the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. He has been awarded four Orders of Lenin and also medals.
