Andreev, Mikhail Stepanovich
Born Sept. 11, 1873, in Tashkent; died Nov. 10, 1948, in Stalinabad. Soviet ethnographer and linguist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1929), academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Uzbek SSR (1943). Andreev led many scientific expeditions in Central Asia and gathered extensive ethnographical collections on the peoples of Middle Asia and India. He studied the old way of life, the art, and survivals of ancient Tadzhik religious beliefs; he also investigated eastern Iranian languages—lag-nob and the languages of the Pamir region.
