Andrei Semenov-Tian-Shanskii

Semenov-Tian-Shanskii, Andrei Petrovich 

Born June 9 (21), 1866, in St. Petersburg; died Apr. 8, 1942, in Leningrad. Soviet entomologist. Son of P. P. Semenov-Tian-Shanskii.

Semenov-Tian-Shanskii studied in the department of natural sciences at the University of St. Petersburg from 1885 to 1889. In 1888 and 1889 he traveled through the Transcaspian Oblast and Western Turkestan, where he studied entomological fauna. In 1890 he joined the staff of the Zoological Museum of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (later the Zoological Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR). He became an honorary member of the Russian Entomological Society in 1909. He processed large collections of beetles and weevils belonging to the society and museum, including the collections of N. M. Przheval’skü, G. N. Potanin, P. K. Kozlov, and P. P. Semenov-Tian-Shanskii. Semenov-Tian-Shanskii’s chief works dealt with the taxonomy and zoogeography of insects and the theory of species. He also translated poems by Horace.
