Andriessen, Mari Silvester

    0.01 sec.
Andriessen, Mari Silvester

Born Dec. 4, 1897, in Haarlem. Dutch sculptor.

Andriessen executed memorials in Rotterdam (1957) and the National Park in Enschede (1946–49) to the victims of World War II and the memorial to the dock workers—heroes of the February 1941 strike in Amsterdam (1950–52). He also sculpted monumental decorative statues and reliefs. Andriessen was an artist-humanist. In his works, mainly of bronze, he affirms the courage, loyalty, and dignity of the common people—the toilers and fighters. Andriessen’s realistic modeling is simple and expressive, and his monuments, some of which form large ensembles, fit naturally into street and park spaces.
