Andronov, Aleksandr Aleksandrovich 

Born March 29 (April 11), 1901, in Moscow; died Oct. 31, 1952, in Gorky. Soviet physicist; academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1946). Graduated from Moscow State University.

Andronov was a scholar and a close associate of L. I. Mandel’shtam. He became a professor at Gorky University in 1931. He was the first to develop an effective mathematical device for analyzing problems of the theory of nonlinear oscillations (1928). By means of this device, Andronov developed the basis for the strict theory of auto-oscillations— oscillations whose period is defined by the parameters of the system itself—and did much for the further formulation and development of the theory. He applied the methods he had developed regarding the theory of nonlinear oscillations to problems of automatic regulation, the solution of a number of important nonlinear problems in theoretical radiotechnology, and important practical problems in the area of automatic regulation and general machine dynamics. In 1937, Andronov published the classic monograph Theory of Oscillations with A. A. Vitt and S. E. Khaikin. He created a school of specialists in the area of nonlinear oscillations and associated problems. He was a deputy and a member of the presidium of the second session of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR and a deputy of the third session of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR.
