In southern ME, southwest of Augusta; organized Mar 18, 1854 from Cumberland, Oxford, and Kennebec counties. Name Origin: For the river, from an Abnaki Indian name meaning either 'place where fish are cured,' 'fishing place for alewives.' or 'fish spearing.'

Area (sq mi): 497.23 (land 470.27; water 26.95). Pop per sq mi: 229.70.
Pop 2005: 108,039. State rank: 5. Pop change: 2000-20005 4.10%; 1990-2000 -1.40%. Pop 2000: 103,793 (White 96.40%; Black or African American 0.70%; Hispanic or Latino 1.00%; Asian 0.60%; Other 1.80%). Foreign born: 2.60%. Median age: 37.20.
Income 2000: per capita $18,734; median household $35,793; Pop below poverty level: 11.10%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $24,377-$28,166.
