Angeli
a dynasty of Byzantine emperors (1185–1204). The Angeli came to power after the overthrow of Andronicus I Comnenus. They ruled in a complicated domestic and foreign political situation and could not overcome the separatism of the provinces. They relied on the high-ranking nobility, whose selfishness and venality reached its apogee under their dynasty. Taxes were increased. The hatred of the people of Constantinople against the crusaders, who were supported by the last Angeli, led to the deposition of the dynasty on Jan. 28, 1204. Members of the Angeli dynasty were Isaac II, 1185–95; Alexius III, brother of Isaac II, 1195–1203, who overthrew and blinded his brother and was deposed by the crusaders; Isaac II again; and his son Alexius IV, 1203–04.
