Anglo-Ethiopian War of 1867–68 

a predatory war waged by Great Britain against Ethiopia. Most of the British troops landed on the African coast in December 1867 and January 1868. On Apr. 10, 1868, British forces won a victory at Arogee, and on April 13 they seized the fortress of Magdala. The commander of the Ethiopian forces, Emperor Theodore II, committed suicide on Apr. 13, 1868, to avoid capture. Thus, Britain won the war. However, the British colonialists, unable to consolidate themselves in Ethiopia because of the resistance of its peoples, were forced to withdraw their troops by the end of May 1868.
