Anglo-Japanese Alliance |
Also found in: Wikipedia | 0.06 sec. |
Anglo-Japanese Alliance(1902–23) Alliance between Britain and Japan to protect their respective interests in China and Korea. Directed against Russian expansionism, the alliance helped Japan in the Russo-Japanese War by discouraging France from entering the war on the Russian side. The alliance later prompted Japan to enter World War I on the side of the Allies. Britain allowed the alliance to lapse after the war, when it no longer feared Russian encroachment in China. The
British tried confrontation with Germany (symbolized by the 1904
Anglo-French Entente Cordiale and an Anglo-German naval arms race) and
appeasement with Japan (the 1902 Anglo-Japanese Alliance and
considerable aid for the Imperial Japanese Navy until the late 1920s). In the chapter on
the lead-up to the Russo-Japanese War, we are given only two pages on
the pivotal Anglo-Japanese Alliance, then provided with little evidence
for the assertion that Japan wanted genuinely to avoid war with Russia. |
