Anglo-Japanese Alliance

Anglo-Japanese Alliance

(1902–23) Alliance between Britain and Japan to protect their respective interests in China and Korea. Directed against Russian expansionism, the alliance helped Japan in the Russo-Japanese War by discouraging France from entering the war on the Russian side. The alliance later prompted Japan to enter World War I on the side of the Allies. Britain allowed the alliance to lapse after the war, when it no longer feared Russian encroachment in China.

Apart from a few hiccups, Britain had cordial relations with Japan which in turn became the basis of the 1902 Anglo-Japanese Alliance, not unravelled until the Washington Conference in 1923.

He also writes: "The 1905 renewal of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance, with a new clause which required the signatories to provide each other with full military assistance in the event either signatory became involved in a war with any other power, further complicated the situation [with the USA]".
