Anichkov, Sergei Viktorovich
Born Sept. 8 (20), 1892, in St. Petersburg. Soviet pharmacologist. Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR since 1950; Hero of Socialist Labor since 1967. Anichkov graduated from the Petrograd Medical Institute in 1918. He was a professor at the Military Medical Academy (1924–37) and the Leningrad Sanitary-Hygienic Medical Institute (1945). Beginning in 1948, he simultaneously headed the department of pharmacology at the Institute of Experimental Medicine of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR. His primary work has been devoted to the pharmacology of the nervous and cardiovascular systems. Many new medicinal substances have been created under his guidance. In 1956, Anichkov served as the USSR representative to the International Council of Pharmacologists. An honorary doctor of the University of Helsinki and Charles University in Prague, he was awarded the USSR State Prize in 1951, two Orders of Lenin, and various medals. WORKSUchebnik farmakologii.
