Anneke, Friedrich 

Born Jan. 31, 1818; died 1872. Participant in the German democratic and workers’ movement. Prussian artillery officer.

Anneke was one of the leaders of the Cologne group known as the Union of Communists. In 1848 he was one of the founders of the Cologne Workers’ Union, in which he sup-ported Gottschalk’s sectarian tactics. Anneke took part in the Baden-Pfalz uprising of 1849, and after it failed he emigrated to Switzerland and later to the USA. He participated in the US Civil War (1861–65) as a colonel in the Union Army.
