Annenkov, Iurii Pavlovich
Born July 11 (23), 1889, in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskii. Russian painter and graphic artist. Annenkov studied at the Shtiglits School in St. Petersburg from 1909 to 1911 and with F. Vallotton in Paris from 1911 to 1912. A portrait painter, artist for the theater and cinema, and one of the founders of Soviet book illustration, he came under the influence of a number of artistic movements of the first quarter of the 20th century, including cubism. Annenkov’s works, especially his drawings, are noted for their sharpness of characterization, often combined with elements of the grotesque. He has been living abroad (Germany and France) since 1924.
