Annenkov, Nikolai Aleksandrovich 

(real surname Kokin). Born Sept. 8 (20), 1899, in the village of In-zhavino, Tambov Province. Soviet actor. People’s Artist of the USSR (1960). Member of the CPSU since 1942. Instructor at the Shchepkin Theatrical School since 1946; professor since 1961.

In 1924, Annenkov graduated from the Higher Theatrical Workshops attached to the Malyi Theater in Moscow and joined that theater’s troupe. A character and dramatic actor, he was especially associated with the plays of A. N. Ostrovskii and M. Gorky, performing the roles of Milovzorov and Neznamov in Ostrovskii’s Guilty Without Guilt, Andrei Belugin in Ostrovskii and N. Solov’ev’s Belugin’s Marriage, and Nil, Cherkun, and Basov in Gorky’s Petit Bourgeois, Barbarians, and Summer Residents. Annenkov’s roles in plays by Soviet dramatists include Ognev in Korneichuk’s The Front, Maksimov in Lavrenev’s For Those at Sea!, Shvandia and Koshkin in Trenev’s Liubov’ Iarovaia, Plakun in Zorin’s Eternal Source, and Novikov in Aleshin’s The Ward. A recipient of the State Prize of the USSR in 1947, 1948, and 1949, he has been awarded the Order of Lenin, two other orders, and various medals. He also appears in motion pictures.
