Anshutz, Thomas (Pollock) (1851–1912) painter; born in Newport, Ky. After studying at the National Academy of Design in New York (1871), he worked with Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of Design (1876), and later became a member of the faculty. His paintings, such as Steelworkers Noontime (c. 1884), reveal his study of anatomy and geometric design, and his populist subject matter. He influenced many pupils, including Robert Henri, Charles Demuth and John Sloan.
