Barkauskas, Antanas Stasevich 

Born Jan. 7 (20), 1917, in the village of Paparčiai, in what is now Kaunas Raion, Lithuanian SSR. Soviet state and party figure. Candidate of economic sciences (1959). Member of the CPSU since 1942.

The son of a peasant, Barkauskas graduated from the Higher Party School Under the Central Committee of the ACP(B) in 1950 and from the Academy of Social Sciences Under the Central Committee of the CPSU in 1959. In 1939 he became a worker in bourgeois Lithuania; after the restoration of Soviet power in Lithuania the following year, he became a political worker in Kaunas. From 1942 to 1944 he served in the Soviet Army and took part in the Great Patriotic War.

In 1944, Barkauskas undertook party and soviet work in Kaunas and Vilnius. From 1953 to 1955 he was head of the department of political economy at the Kaunas Polytechnic Institute. He became head of a department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Lithuania in 1959 and served as a secretary of the Central Committee from 1961 to 1975. He was named chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Lithuanian SSR in 1975 and deputy chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR in 1976. He became a member of the Central Auditing Commission of the CPSU in 1976 and a candidate member of the CC of the CPSU in 1981.

Barkauskas was a deputy to the ninth and tenth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. He has been awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the October Revolution, three other orders, and various medals.
