There's a lot going on here: the Wiccans and their celebrations and bonfires; the pro-war/anti war groups; the nasty longtime super-religious neighbors; the history of the families and their connection with the ante bellum antislavery movement.
Adam Hoch-schild's story of how he reconstructed a scene from 1787 for his book about England's antislavery movement Bury the Chains, was fascinating, as was Debra Dickerson's account of how she wrote about her nephew, who was shot and paralyzed for life because a gang member didn't like the way he was waving his hands.
With Bury the Chains, Adam Hochschild presents the first narrative history of the British antislavery movement in more than a generation.
