Anton Antonovich Kaminskii

Kaminskii, Anton Antonovich 

Born Nov. 5 (17), 1862, in Sebezh District, now Pskov Oblast; died Aug. 5, 1936, in Leningrad. Soviet climatologist.

Kaminskii graduated from the University of St. Petersburg in 1888. That same year he began working in the Main Physics Observatory, where he directed the work of the department for the network of meteorological stations until 1918 and headed the division of climatology from 1922 to 1932. He participated in the organization and the work of the State Institute of Hydrology (1919–29) and the Central Hydrometeorological Bureau of the Central Administration of Marine Transportation (1922). Kaminskii was the organizer and first head of the climatology subdepartment (from 1932) at Leningrad State University. His principal works were devoted to air humidity, air pressure, the transfer of water vapor, and dry winds. He devoted a series of works to a climatological description of individual regions of the USSR and to problems of medical, agricultural, forestry, and marine meteorology, as well as to hydrology.
