Anton Vladimirovich Dumanskh

Dumanskh, Anton Vladimirovich 

Born June 8 (20), 1880, in the village of Ivanovo, present-day Vladimir Oblast; died May 14, 1967, in Kiev. Soviet chemist; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1933), academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1945). Became a member of the CPSU in 1940. Graduated from the Kiev Polytechnic Institute in 1903.

In 1904, Dumanskii organized the first colloid chemistry laboratory in the country. He introduced physical research methods into colloid chemistry and proposed the use of ultracentrifuging for measuring the size of colloidal particles. He received the Great Mendeleev Prize in 1930 for his research on the conditions of formation and precipitation of colloidal solutions. From 1946 to 1960 he was the director of the Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. In 1935 he founded the periodical Kolloidnyi zhurnal, which he edited until his death. He was awarded two Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and various medals.
