Antonovich, Daniil Isidorovich 

(pseudonym of D. I. Antonovich-Bud’ko). Born Dec. 10 (22), 1889, in Belopol’e, Kharkov Province. Soviet Ukrainian actor; People’s Artist of the USSR (1954). Member of the CPSU since 1944.

In 1919, Antonovich graduated from the Lysenko Kiev Institute of Music and Drama. His stage activity began at the Shevchenko Kiev Theater. In 1926, Antonovich became an actor at the Shevchenko Kharkov Theater (the former Berezil’ Theater). He was one of the first actors in the Ukrainian theater to create the characters of Bolsheviks. Antonovich played many roles in A. E. Korneichuk’s plays—Gaidai in The Loss of the Naval Squadron, Berest in Platon Krechet, Taras Golota in Truth, Makar in Makar Dubrava, and others. Among Antonovich’s other roles are Zhelezniak in Shevchenko’s Haidamaks, Iaroslav in Kocherga’s Iaroslav the Wise, Shvidenko in Dmiterko’s General Vatutin, Tikhon in Ostrovskii’s The Thunderstorm, and Koshkin in Trenev’s Liubov’ Iarovaia. Since 1949, Antonovich has been engaged in pedagogical work at the Kharkov Theater Institute (since 1957 as a professor). He won the State Prize of the USSR in 1948 and has been awarded the Order of Lenin and two other orders.
