On eastern border of AZ; organized Feb 14, 1879 (prior to statehood) from Mohave County. Name Origin: For the Apache Indian tribe, of Athapascan linguistic stock, who inhabited the land for centuries. The name is variously said to mean 'man,' 'battles,' or 'enemy.'

Area (sq mi): 11218.42 (land 11204.88; water 13.54). Pop per sq mi: 6.20.
Pop 2005: 69,343. State rank: 10. Pop change: 2000-20005 -0.10%; 1990-2000 12.70%. Pop 2000: 69,423 (White 17.70%; Black or African American 0.20%; Hispanic or Latino 4.50%; Asian 0.10%; Other 80.20%). Foreign born: 0.90%. Median age: 27.00.
Income 2000: per capita $8,986; median household $23,344; Pop below poverty level: 37.80%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $13,632-$16,476.
