Robert Louis Stevenson Stevenson, Robert Louis, 1850–94, Scottish novelist, poet, and essayist, b. Edinburgh. Handicapped from youth by delicate health, he struggled all his life against tuberculosis. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1875, but he never practiced.

Apia

Seaport town (pop., 2001: 38,836) and capital, Samoa. It lies on the northern coast of Upolu Island. Its economy centres on the export of goods to American Samoa. Robert Louis Stevenson is buried at nearby Mount Vaea; Vailima, his former home, is now the residence of the head of state.

capital of Western Samoa (in the Pacific Ocean). Population in 1966, 25,500. Port on the northern shore of Upolu Island, through which the country’s foreign trade operations are conducted. Copra, bananas, and cacao beans are exported. Apia’s harbor serves as an anchorage for transpacific vessels. The Apia airport has international importance.
