The basic unit was the apothecaries’ pound (Latin libra, abbreviated lb), divided into 12 ounces. One ounce (uncia) contained 8 drachmae, 1 drachma contained 3 scrupula, 1 scrupulum contained 20 grana. The Russian apothecaries’ pound = 358.323 grams; 1 ounce = 29.860 grams; 1 drachma = 3.732 grams; 1 scrupulum = 1.244 grams; 1 granum = 62.209 milligrams. In the English system of measurement (used in Great Britain, the USA, and several other countries) 1 apothecaries’ pound (ap) = 373.242 grams; one ounce (ap oz) = 31.1035 grams; 1 drachma (ap drach) = 3.88793 grams; 1 scrupulum (scruple) = 1.29598 grams; 1 granum (gr) = 64.7989 milligrams.
