Established: 1925. Description: Protects, maintains, and manages the 2,175-mile Appalachian National Scenic Trail, a 250,000-acre greenway extending from Maine to Georgia. (See separate entry in national trails section.) Publishes guidebooks and maps for the Trail. Members: 40,000 Dues: $30/year.
Publications: AT Journeys (6x/year); free to members. The Register (4x/year) online newsletter; free to agency partners and individuals who manage a section of the Trail.

Using information from the Appalachian Trail Conference on average rates of travel over portions of the trail, the authors estimated that hikers could be intercepted in Waynesboro, Virginia, where the Appalachian Trail crosses the Blue Ridge Parkway.
