Appell, Paul Emile

Born Sept. 27, 1855, in Strasbourg; died Oct. 24, 1930, in Paris. French mathematician and mechanical engineer; honorary rector of the University of Paris; member of the Parisian Academy of Sciences (1892).

Appell was known for his works on mechanics, geometry, and the theory of analytic functions. He wrote a major multi-volume course in theoretical mechanics that was published over a period of several decades (Russian translation, Theoretical Mechanics, vols. 1–2, 1960). Appell also wrote basic handbooks on the theory of elliptical, algebraic, and hyper-geometric functions (in Russian translation, Elements of Mathematical Analysis, parts 1–2, 1923–24).
