CarPlay(redirected from Apple in the Car)
CarPlayA feature of Apple's mobile operating system that enables the functions in iDevices to operate through the automobile's audio/video system. Although iPod music and Bluetooth hands-free have been built into cars for some time, CarPlay integrates phone, music, navigation and messages.
Formerly known as "iOS in the Car," many of the iDevice's screens are replicated on the larger vehicle screen, and drivers interact via the car's microphone and speakers. For example, the Siri virtual assistant can be used without reaching for the phone. When users upgrade their iPhones and iPads, CarPlay is automatically upgraded.
Who's On Board?
Chevrolet, Honda, Nissan, Acura, Infinity, Hyundai, Kia, Volvo, Opel, Mercedes, Nissan, Ferrari and Jaguar are some of the manufacturers supporting CarPlay in 2014. See Apple Car, SYNC and Open Automotive Alliance.
