Áprily, Lajos

Born Nov. 14, 1887, in Braşov; died Aug. 7, 1967, in Budapest. Hungarian poet.

Áprily’s verses, which continued the traditions of realist classical literature (the collections Rustic Elegy, 1921; Invisible Letters, 1939; Smoke of Avel, 1957, and others), are filled with lyricism, humanity, and a harmonious sensation of nature. He translated into Hungarian Eugene Onegin by A. S. Pushkin (1954) and works by M. Iu. Lermontov, N. A. Nekrasov, N. V. Gogol, and I. S. Turgenev.
