Arao (ärä`ō), city (1990 pop. 59,507), Kumamoto prefecture, W Kyushu, Japan, on Ariake Bay. It is a port and is part of the Omuta-Arao industrial region where chemicals, bricks, fertilizers, and plastics are produced.
