In east-central CO, south of Denver; original county, organized Nov 1, 1861 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For a tribe of Algonquian linguistic stock. Name is probably Pawnee tirapihu 'trader.' Also suggested, but not documented, 'blue-sky men' and 'cloud men.'

Area (sq mi): 805.43 (land 803.14; water 2.29). Pop per sq mi: 658.80.
Pop 2005: 529,090. State rank: 3. Pop change: 2000-20005 8.40%; 1990-2000 24.60%. Pop 2000: 487,967 (White 73.90%; Black or African American 7.70%; Hispanic or Latino 11.80%; Asian 3.90%; Other 8.50%). Foreign born: 11.00%. Median age: 34.50.
Income 2000: per capita $28,147; median household $53,570; Pop below poverty level: 5.80%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $42,829-$45,013.
Unemployment 2004: 5.50%. Change from 2000: 2.30%. Median travel time to work: 26.10 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 49.90%.
