Also found in: Wikipedia | 0.04 sec. |
Isozaki Arata(born July 23, 1931, Oita, Kyushu, Japan) Japanese avant-garde architect. He studied at the University of Tokyo and opened his own studio in 1963. His first notable building is the Oita Prefectural Library (1966), which shows the influence of the Metabolist school. In his later works, which often synthesize Eastern and Western elements, he used bold geometric forms and frequently made historical allusions. Among his innovative structures are the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art (1986) and Art Tower (1990) in Mito, Japan. How to thank TFD for its existence? Though the photographs here convey an appropriate sense of artistic serenity, actually bringing to life the vision of people such as Daniel Buren, Yoko Ono, Norman Foster and Arata Isozaki was fraught with difficulties. In winning the contract, "CityLife," (whose designer team is composed by Zaha Hadid, Arata Isozaki, Daniel Libeskind and Pier Paolo Maggiora) beat out seven other groups of internationally renowned architects. The competing architects included Arata Isozaki and Mario Botta, known for their designs of the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, respectively, and the American architect Eric Owen Moss, whose "garbage bags" were, reportedly, Gergiev's favorite design. |
