Binturong
(Arctictis binturong), a predatory mammal of the family Viverridae. The only species of the genus Arctictis. Body length 72–77 cm, tail length 60–68 cm, weight 9–11 kg. The pelt is thick, long, and black with an admixture of white hairs; sometimes, when there is a considerable admixture of white hairs, it is grayish. Edges of ears are white. The tail is also covered with long hairs, and its posterior half is prehensile. The binturong is widely distributed in northwestern India, in Burma, on the peninsulas of Indochina and Malaysia, and on the islands of Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan (Borneo), and Palawan. It inhabits jungles and is predominantly nocturnal. The binturong feeds on fruits, birds’ eggs, and small animals and birds. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
