Arda 

a river in Bulgaria (its lower course is in Greece; its mouth is in Turkey); right tributary of the Maritsa River. It begins in the Rhodope Mountains. Its length is 278 km, and its basin area is more than 5,000 sq km. The greatest flow of the Arda occurs in February and March. There are reservoirs and hydroelectric power plants on the river, and it is also used for irrigation. In its lower course the Arda is navigable for small ships. The cities of Rudozem and Kurdzhali (Bulgaria) are located on the river.
