area navigation [ēr·ē·ə ‚nav·ə′gā·shən] (navigation) An aircraft navigation system in which radial and distance information from a Vortac station or distance information from two or more Vortacs is used to fix aircraft position, so that navigation is not restricted to airways or direct routes between stations. MAid" (which stands for "Mobility Aide") is a "smart" wheelchair designed both for narrow area navigation (NAN), such as entering and exiting restrooms, and wide area navigation (WAN) of such rapidly changing, often crowded environments as shopping centers, convention halls or transportation terminals. This certification enables more than 110 airlines, currently customers of Lufthansa Systems' Lido FMS database, to apply for use of the new precision area navigation (P-RNAV) procedures at their aviation authority. In addition to REV1 functions already certified, L4A includes A330/A340 compatibility, Polar Area Navigation, and automatic dependent surveillance (ADS) for FANS A. |
