Aref’ev, Anatolii Vasil’evich
Born Nov. 24, 1918, in Stavropol’, Samarskaia Province. Soviet designer of stage sets. People’s Artist of the USSR (1967). Became a member of the CPSU in 1945 and a candidate member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Kirghizia in 1967. Aref’ev studied at the Art and Pedagogical Technicum in Penza (1936–38). Since 1947 he has worked in the Kirghiz Theater of Opera and Ballet in Frunze. (He has been chief artist there since 1949.) He has designed the sets for more than 70 opera and ballet productions, including Carmen by G. Bizet (1949); Swan Lake by P. I. Tchaikovsky (1949); Prince Igor by A. P. Borodin (1954); Toktogul by V. A. Vlasov, A. Maldybaev, and V. G. Fere (1958); Cholpon by M. R. Raukhverger (1958); and The Unknown Soldier by K. M. Molchanov (1967).
